A screen-weapon error is a discrepancy between a depiction and a specified requirement. Its significance depends on whether it changes historical identification, continuity or the legibility of an action.
Historical and fictional requirements
A period-identification error concerns whether an object fits the represented time, place and user. A fictional design follows a different requirement: it must be assessed against what the story establishes rather than automatically treated as an inaccurate real weapon.
The Aliens pulse rifle has a physical Thompson ancestry and a fictional identity. The difference between them is part of the production arrangement, not by itself an error within the story.
Continuity and represented state
A continuity discrepancy concerns a change that the represented action does not explain. It can involve configuration, position or condition without making the underlying model historically wrong.
Identifying that discrepancy requires the relevant screen states. A restored collectible is not enough: the Royal Armouries DH-17 does not reproduce a screen-used configuration. Comparing an old frame to that later object can manufacture an apparent error in the wrong record.
Legibility of cause and effect
A different problem arises when the relation between discharge, impact and consequence is unclear. John Wick’s sound account emphasizes audible consequences for missed shots and arrows. That production concern addresses whether an action registers as an event in the surrounding space.
Take a constructed sequence with a historically incorrect rifle but clear movement and consequences. It has an identification error. Take another with a correct rifle but an unexplained change in its position between shots. It has a continuity problem. Correcting one does not automatically correct the other.
A hierarchy tied to the question
The framework ranks consequences only after the critical question is specified. A museum identification exercise gives priority to historical detail. An analysis of action geography gives priority to the information needed to follow movement. Neither priority establishes what every viewer notices first.
The audience-wide ranking remains unknown without reception evidence. The useful distinction is that errors belong to different requirements and need different corrections. Counting all discrepancies as equivalent loses the reason each one matters.
