Flashlight output and cinematic brightness describe different properties. Output ratings characterize emitted light, while an image records light through a particular photographic and display process.
Lumens and candela
Lumens measure total light output. Candela measures luminous intensity in a direction; a flashlight’s peak beam intensity describes the strongest part of its beam. These quantities answer different questions about the same light.
Concentrating output into a narrower beam changes its distribution. Two products with comparable total output need not illuminate a small distant subject in the same way. Conversely, a concentrated bright spot does not establish greater total output.
Runtime also requires a defined endpoint. Streamlight’s explanation of standardized testing measures runtime until output reaches 10 percent of its initial value. That duration is not a promise that initial brightness continues unchanged until the final minute.
Recorded appearance
A filmed beam passes through choices about exposure, atmosphere and the surrounding image. Saving Private Ryan used smoke both to supply battlefield atmosphere and to reduce unwanted sunlight. The atmosphere contributed to the recorded look while also changing the conditions under which the scene was photographed.
Take the same lamp photographed against two backgrounds with different exposure settings. A brighter-looking beam in one finished image does not establish that the lamp emitted more light. The comparison has changed the recording conditions.
Comparable measurements
Flashlight comparisons require the same quantity and compatible test conditions. Image comparisons require control of the photographic conditions as well. A dramatic beam on screen establishes an appearance within a shot; it cannot substitute for a measured output rating or reveal the lamp’s runtime.
